Bristol Flyers to compete in new European league

By Charlie Watts  Wednesday May 3, 2023

Bristol’s professional basketball team are to become the first club in the country to compete in a newly-formed European league.

From next season, Bristol Flyers will take part in the European North Basketball League (ENBL) alongside teams from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Czech Republic, Kosovo, Israel and Ukraine.

Flyers’ addition to the ENBL will take the total number of teams competing in the 2023/24 season to 16. The clubs are split into two eight-team groups and compete in seven mid-week games during the regular season.

Flyers director Jon Lansdown said the Bristol Sport-backed team are “really excited” to be joining the competition.

He said “Participating in the ENBL brings to life our European ambitions and offers us a platform to continue to grow and build further momentum for the Flyers.

“It will be fantastic to introduce European basketball to Bristol and we look forward to what the competition will bring, not just for the club but our fans and the city too.”

Head Coach Andreas Kapoulas added: “This is an exciting opportunity to experience European competition and understand what it takes to compete at this level, both on and off the court.

“As a club we have been on an incredible journey over the last 18 years and with our new venue on the horizon, we want to continue our progress by taking the next steps in the development of our programme.”

Established in 2005, the Bristol Flyers compete in the top-flight British Basketball League and secured their highest league finish of third during the 2022/23 season.

The team play at the SGS College Arena in Stoke Gifford, but a new 3,626-seater arena next to Ashton Gate Stadium, the Sports & Convention Centre, is to become their new home, with construction set to start soon.
