David Payne called up to England one-day squad
Gloucestershire’s David Payne has been called up to the England one-day international squad for the first time.
The 30-year-old fast-medium bowler has once again impressed with the ball this season and has finally made it into the England squad after being tipped as “one to watch” by England selector Angus Fraser in 2015.
Payne’s call-up comes as positive Covid-19 results for three players and four staff members means that a new squad has to be named for the ODI series against Pakistan which starts in Cardiff on Thursday.
is needed now More than ever
The new squad features nine uncapped players as the original squad enters a period of self-isolation, with Ben Stokes returning to to captain the side.
Ashley Giles, managing director of England men’s cricket, said the squad changes gave the new players such as Payne an opportunity to prove themselves at the highest level.
“It’s an exciting group of players, with some young talent and some players who have impressed at domestic level over a long period of time,” said Giles.
“We’re in unprecedented territory, in terms of replacing an entire squad and management team, and I’m very proud of how everyone has come together in order to get it done – both those within the ECB and from the county game.”
