Tour of Britain 2018 calls into Bristol
The Clifton Suspension Bridge was the spectacular backdrop to the finishing kilometres of Stage 3 of the Tour of Britain as Tour de France king of the mountains winner Julian Alaphilippe took the win in a bunch sprint on Ladies Mile.
After setting off at 11.30am on Tuesday morning, riders went out on a 79-mile circuit of the Somerset countryside including a climb up Cheddar Gorge before returning back to the Downs.

French rider Alaphilippe was greeted on the podium by Bristol deputy lord mayor Lesley Alexander to receive his stage winner’s prize.
Patrick Bevin was presented with the green race leader’s journey, with Alaphilippe also becoming the race’s new points leader, Scott Davies retaining the king of the mountains jersey and Matthew Teggart retaining the points jersey and Hugh Carthy taking best British rider.
Among the big names taking part in this year’s race is four-time world time trial champion Tony Martin and the German was named as the combativity award winner for the stage after his numerous attacks during the day.
Millions of pounds were generated for the Bristol and wider economy thanks to the arrival of the race – sponsored by Bristol-headquartered business OVO Energy – with organisers also hoping to leave a lasting legacy with more people getting on two wheels.
