Everything you need to know ahead of Chantelle Cameron vs Katie Taylor II
Women’s boxing has been on the rise in recent years, and that’s largely down to these two pioneers of the sport — Ireland’s Katie Taylor and England’s Chantelle Cameron.
The pair traded blows in a blockbuster fight for the undisputed super lightweight championships back in May, with Cameron coming out on top with a shock win over Taylor in Dublin.
That was KT’s first time fighting on home soil in her professional career, and it certainly didn’t end the way she – nor the 9,000 passionate Irish fans in attendance – had hoped.
is needed now More than ever
Luckily, Cameron has granted her a second chance to right her wrongs as the Northampton native has agreed to the much-anticipated rematch taking place back in the Irish capital.
There’s not long to go now until the second fight. So, with all the makings of another Fight of the Year contender, we’ve put together this guide of all you need to know ahead of the bout.
When and where is it taking place?
Despite having the upper hand in the negotiating process for the second fight after winning their first encounter, Cameron has somewhat reluctantly agreed for their rematch to take place at the 3Arena in Dublin — where they first traded blows in May.
The fight is pencilled in for November 25, so get it marked in your calendars now as you’re not going to want to miss this.
Who is the favourite?
After underestimating the undisputed super lightweight champion earlier this year, it will come as no surprise that the bookmakers are taking no changes ahead of this second fight — with the odds on Chantelle Cameron v Katie Taylor largely in the favour of the English boxer.
That means it will be the first time in Taylor’s lucrative professional career that she’s fancied as the underdog. The Irishwoman will know what she has to do to arguably save her career, however, and will take no notice of the odds.
What have they said in the build-up?
Despite plenty of claims that this could make or break Taylor’s career, with even promoter Eddie Hearn stating that a second defeat could be the be-all and end-all for the Irish fighter, Taylor doesn’t have retirement on her mind — and thinks she is far more prepared this time around.
“The preparation has been a lot different,” the Irishwoman said. “I feel a lot better going into this fight. I feel in top form right now.
“I don’t want to really expand on it, I just didn’t feel myself going into the last fight. It was just a flat performance. I was good enough to step into the ring on the night, I just fell that bit short.
“Mentally and physically, I feel a lot better for this one, that’s obviously a big deal.
“I’m not thinking that this fight is going to be my last fight and I’m not thinking of any other outcome other than a win. So, any other outcome for me isn’t even entering my mind.
“I feel very fresh, feel very good in the gym right now. I know I have a lot of fights left in me.”
On the other side, Cameron is planning to be more destructive in the ring this time out, saying: “I have to be more aggressive. First fight I showed too much respect.
“You beat Katie Taylor you’ve completed boxing, because she’s such a great fighter.
“I’m expecting a better Katie Taylor. She needs this win against me so I’m making sure I’m a lot better.
“I still have more gears. The first fight was good, but the second fight will be even better. I’ve got to be spiteful and go back to being more aggressive.”
