Bristol City break transfer record with sale of centre-back

By Martin Booth  Saturday Aug 3, 2019

Bristol City have sold Adam Webster to Brighton & Hove Albion for a new club record.

The defender has joined the Premier League club in a four-year deal worth a reported £20m, bringing an end to his one-year stay in BS3.

24-year-old Webster signed for the Robins from Ipswich in the summer of 2018 and helped them finish eighth in the Championship last season.

City’s chief executive officer Mark Ashton said: “We wish Adam the best of luck in the Premier League and thank him for his services last season. He made a significant contribution to our campaign and developed under Lee and his coaching team.

“We turned down several bids from a number of clubs for Adam over the summer but we believe now is the right time and the right value for Bristol City for him to move on.

“For the second time this summer it’s a record fee received by this club for a player and this will help us achieve sustainable success.”

Webster made 47 appearances for City, scoring three goals. His move to the south coast is part of a domino series of transfers, with Leicester City set to sell Harry Maguire to Manchester United and replace Maguire with Brighton star Lewis Dunk, with the Seagulls replacing Dunk with Webster.

Quoted by Brighton’s official website, Webster reflected warmly on his time at Bristol City, but could not hide his enthusiasm at what lies ahead with the Seagulls.

“From the moment I walked in at Bristol City, I fell in love with the place, because it is a great club. It was disappointing that we couldn’t get into the play-offs, but personally, it was a good season and I have really fond memories from my time there.”

The Robins begin their 2019/20 Championship campaign against Leeds at Ashton Gate on Sunday.
