Bristol City give Man City a scare in Carabao Cup semi-final

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Jan 10, 2018

With almost the last kick of the 2012 Premier League season, Sergio Aguero scored against QPR to help Manchester City win the league title for the first time.

Fast forward almost five years and that man again, Aguero, scored with almost the last kick of the game to ensure that Manchester City go into the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at Ashton Gate in two weeks’ time with a 2-1 lead.

Bristol City had taken a deserved lead in the match going into half-time 1-0 up after a penalty scored by Bobby Reid.

The delight of the 7,680 travelling fans in the Etihad Stadium (the highest away attendance in its 15-year history) was matched by the fans watching live in the bar at Ashton Gate:

And of course, there was the requisite gif on Twitter:

There was a bit of banter online when Kevin De Bruyne scored at the beginning of the second half, with Man City appropriating Bristol City’s now world famous goal gifs:

After the match, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola paid warm tribute to Bristol City’s effort. “All credit to Bristol City because you cannot knock four Premier League teams out of the competition without important players,” he said.

“They are a nice team to watch. Their strikers have good mobility and courage to play. The game was really good for both sides – and for the fans of both sides.”

He added: “At Bristol it will be tough. We experienced that at Huddersfield last season and against Wolves here. I can imagine if we go to Cardiff in the FA Cup, it will be tough as well.

“We have to go to Ashton Gate, try to make a good performance and reach final.”

Speaking to BCTV, Bristol City manager Lee Johnson said: “I thought the boys were superb. It’s disappointing to concede late in the manner we did but we’re still in the tie, we have the away goal and the will learn form that.

“There’s nothing quite like learning in play against teams like that, world-class opposition who we fully respected before the game with our team selection and the boys gave it a great go.

“Our fans are disappointed but I know there have enjoyed themselves because of the way they sang, the way they stayed in it and the way they clapped the boys off at the end.”
