Bristol City Women reach final of Conti Cup
Bristol City Women will go into the final of the Conti Cup as big underdogs against a formidable Chelsea side who beat them 9-0 just a few months ago.
But a final is a final, and the Vixens will travel to Watford’s Vicarage Road stadium at the end of a cup run which has been a welcome distraction from their woeful league form.
A first City goal by Reading loanee Kiera Skeels, flicking the ball into the Leicester City net from a cross whipped in by Ebony Salmon, was the difference between the sides at Twerton Park.
is needed now More than ever
Former Leicester and England striker Emile Heskey watched on from the touchline as City made their first ever league cup final, having made the semi-final in 2012 and last eight in 2018.
This 1-0 win against the Foxes saw the WSL side up against a team from the division below them, but while City remain rooted to the bottom of the table, Leicester are flying high on top of the Championship.
City had the best chance of the first half, with Kirstie Levell just pushing the ball onto the crossbar from Charlie Wellings’ well-struck half-volley.
In the City goal, Sophie Baggaley made a smart save to deny Paige Bailey-Gayle in the second half.
City survived a scare with just one minute of the match to go as the ball went tantalisingly wide – but caretaker Matt Beard’s side determinably held on to reach a dream cup final against Chelsea on March 14.
