City keeper bags fans’ player of the month for a second time

By Jac Rogers  Wednesday Feb 13, 2019

Bristol City Football Club have made a tremendous start to 2019. The men’s team are currently on a nine match winning streak which has seen them climb to fifth in the Championship, whilst City Women are also unbeaten so far this year, winning five and drawing three of their eight games so far.

City’s women also enjoyed double success earlier this week with manager Tanya Oxtoby taking home the LMA manager of the month award for January and goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley winning the PFA fans player of the month.

The award came as a shock to Baggaley, who said: “I think it’s nice to receive recognition from the fans, I’d say this time was less expected than the last time. But to win it shows the fans do recognise the hard work.

“I think I’ve had better months but maybe the team’s performance has made me look better. We’ve had a couple of really good results as a team.”

This is the second time Baggaley has won the award since her move from Birmingham to City was made permanent in the summer and she has her sights set on catching her former club, who sit one place above Bristol in the league.

“Obviously as a team we want to finish as high up in the table as we can. We’ll just take every game as it comes and try and get the three points in each. If we end up closing the gap then great, if not then we know we’ve done the best that we can as a team.”

City women face Durham in the FA Cup this Sunday and it could prove an excellent opportunity for them to end the season with some silverware.

“We want to go far in the FA cup, everyone wants a good cup run. We’ll get difficult draws along the way but if we can take the momentum we’ve built in the league, into the cup then I don’t see why we can’t go very far.”

One of City’s standout performers this season seems to have settled into her new surroundings fairly easily after spending the 2017-2018 season on loan with the Bristol club.

“I really like the city, I think Bristol’s a great city, there’s lots going on all the time, lots to do, lots of places to see, I really like it.

“In terms of the team it’s been great, we all get on really well and it’s been like that since I got here. Tanya’s come in this year and done a great job and it’s shown in our performances.”
