Football / Fan's View

‘Fickle? Football fans? What?’

By Dave Skinner  Friday Feb 19, 2016

It is well know that one should “start as they mean to go on”. Not always applicable, but, in Lee Johnson’s case the opening victory against a good Ipswich side certainly gave his new look Bristol City side the ideal start.

I say new look, but, it was the same eleven who had taken the field away at Charlton the week before that beat Mick McCarthy’s men. This is, in-part, due to the lack of alternatives available within our squad, but also maybe a suggests that John Pemberton’s opinion will be held in high regard moving forward.

As “Come on you Reds” customarily rang around the stadium at kick off, certain sections of the crowd could be seen bouncing – an early sign of acceptance for our new boss.

And if the naysayers were nay saying at kick off, by full time the whole of Ashton Gate had, as it appeared to me at least, forgotten any of the negativity surrounding Johnson’s appointment and appeared to be backing him 100 per cent. Fickle? Football fans? What?

So, vitally we are off to a good start with Lee at the helm. The win was also our second on the bounce, a first for this season. We are now five points clear of the dreaded 22nd spot and I am sure from here we will continue to pull further away from the drop zone.

It was also welcome to see some bold changes mid match, something Gary Johnson was also partial too. Tomlin and Kodjia came off on the sixtieth minute to be replaced by Agard and Wilbraham. Pretty revolutionary stuff when compared to the last regime.

Johnson is probably right to be cautious when thinking of if and which position he should dip into the loan transfer market. I had previously suggested that we needed a striker but with those four front players we probably have enough fire power to keep us in the division and may only need to strengthen if we have a bad injury or if somebody of real quality becomes available.

So, it is with good cheer that the two thousand plus City fans should be making their way to Milton Keynes this weekend. A third successive victory would continue to see us again moving in the right direction before a tough home match against Brighton the following Tuesday.

Good luck guys, three points, a good performance and maybe a goal or two for Kodjia please!
