Gas Girls finish the year top of the league

By Martin Booth  Monday Dec 18, 2023

Bristol Rovers Women’s have ended the year with a 4-0 win against Pucklechurch.

It means that as 2023 comes to a close, the Gas Girls are sitting top of the South West Premier Division over the Christmas break.

The emphatic victory over Pucklechurch on Sunday at Lockleaze Sports Centre saw two goals from Libby Bell from free-kicks, a half-volley from outside the box by Rianne Bourne-Hallett, and Neve Platt benefitting at close range from a rebound off the crossbar from Helena Costa.

Gas Girls captain Bell told Bristol24/7 that she had been practising taking free kicks in training during the week with help from manager Nathan Hallett-Young.

Bell was a deserved player of the match against Pucklechurch, but she also praised the team performance, which also saw another clean sheet from keeper Charlotte Cousin.

“All the girls played really well today and we got the three points which is the most important thing, with the second being goal difference so happy to get four goals and a clean sheet today,” said Bell.

Bell said that she does not try to think too hard about free-kicks on the pitch. “I try to take them pretty quick just so I’m not over-thinking it and then sky it, but they just went it today!”

The Gas Girls’ last match of 2023 saw the return of Katie Davies to the starting lineup following a brief spell at Bridgwater, as well as the re-signing of goalkeeper Georgie Hunt who was among the substitutes.

Hallett-Young added: “You can’t be better finishing the year in first. Obviously, there’s still a lot of football left to play but at the end of this calendar year, I’m more than happy with what we have achieved so far.

“With the football we played today, I don’t think anyone is going to be able to hang with us.”
