Håland heroics and speedster Salmon help Bristol City into Conti Cup semi-final

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jan 14, 2021

Bristol City Women in the Continental Cup are a different side from Bristol City Women in the FA Women’s Super League.

A 2-1 win against Aston Villa at Twerton Park on Wednesday evening secured City’s place in the semi-finals of the cup competition, putting their woes in the league – where they have yet to win all season – behind them.

Norwegian Benedicte Håland impressed in goal in her first game for the Vixens, while striker Ebony Salmon scored two goals in three second half minutes to take the tie beyond her former team.

City manager Tanya Oxtoby praised a “super effort from the players” after a day that started with the news that first team regulars Carla Humphrey and Sophie Baggaley had both tested positive for coronavirus.

Oxtoby said: “They have played with so much freedom in the cup and it’s a pleasure to watch and they played with a smile on their face.”
