‘Is Matt Smith free to rejoin City on loan?’

By Dave Skinner  Friday Dec 11, 2015

This week saw two very senior members of the Bristol City fraternity give a rallying call to our somewhat faltering team. Boss Steve Cotteril and club captain Aaron Wilbraham have called for squad unity and reaffirmed their belief that there is enough quality within the group to at least stay in this division, and potentially do much better.

This taken in isolation should not necessarily cause City fans too many concerns. There is certainly no need to panic performance wise. The last three games, against Hull City, Rotherham United and Blackburn Rovers, have seen a good, then a bad, then an OK performance.

These three games have only however, sadly, earned us one point. Here-in lies the problem. Performances need to be turned into points. Chances need to be taken. And again, this is where we might be lacking.

So, basically, this is a long winded way of saying, and just a few weeks before that window opens again, that we need to invest in some fire power as soon as possible. As was well-documented in the pre-transfer window silly season, City lost out on a couple of extremely high profile strikers.

As we know, Mr Kodjia has been a revelation so far this year, and would be my player of the season if a vote was taken today. Agard and Wilbraham have showed a lot of endeavour this season and are certainly workman like, but, however, I think its fair to say they lack the real quality that is needed in a tough Championship that I have been impressed with.

It remains to be seen as to whether or not the people in charge will be quick off the mark to bolster our squad or if we will struggle again in the window as we did in the summer.

Permanent signings might not necessarily be on the cards given the notorious high January prices but one would imagine Cotterill won’t be shy of entering the loan market as he has done freely over the last year or two. Is Matt Smith free by chance?

It looks like City will be taking five hundred people plus away to Huddersfield this weekend for a relegation battle. The vigour, and willingness of our supporters, to follow our side up and down the country never ceases to amaze me. Fingers crossed City will secure three points and bring me and others some much needed cheer.
