‘League One and Championship divide widening’
Sometimes in life, one can be a little hasty. The daily/weekly grind can get you down and things can burden themselves upon you to the point where your judgement can be somewhat distorted.
Last weeks article, for those of you that read it, read like such a sense had come over me at my time of writing. My usual positive (or some may say deluded, when it comes to Bristol City) outlook that I have tried to portray had, briefly, left me for a more negative and reactive persona that should be reserved for fans forums and the terraces.
I apologise for that negativity. I am still, however, deeply concerned by our wing-back formation. I do though welcome the selection of the more defensively minded Derek Williams to the left-sided role, filling the spot vacated by the wonderful Joe Bryan.Joe was moved into midfield, a position I could see him flourishing in given his pace, tenacity and eye for goal.
is needed now More than ever
It was a shame that the creditable 2-2 draw away to Ipswich saw us fall to the foot of the table. From reading the match reports and interviews it appeared that we more than held our own and should really have walked away with the full three points.
I couldn’t agree more with Steve Cotteril’s comments during the week about the need for us to be more ruthless and to finish teams off when we are in the ascendancy.
This week sees us host MK Dons who sit one place above us in the Championship table. One place above them sit Preston North End. Can anyone see what these three teams have in common? Yep, they were all promoted last season from League One.
This could suggest a worrying trend. The Championship is the fourth largest league in Europe in terms of attendance and the increasing levels of money in the game, especially at the top level in England, makes the playing field that much more uneven for newly promoted teams. The divide between League One and the Championship looks to be ever widening and sadly the statistics so far this season do little to disprove this.
As with any promoted side, the hardest games of the previous season (against those we were competing with for promotion) become the supposed easiest the following year. To this extent, our game against MK Dons should provide us with our best opportunity of getting three home points so far this season. Fingers crossed I will be able to raise my quill with nothing but gay abandon after a memorizing victory to pen next weeks piece.
