Lee Johnson signs new four-year deal with Bristol City

By Martin Booth  Thursday May 23, 2019

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson has put pen to paper on a new four-year contract at Ashton Gate.

Having played 199 games for the club between 2006 and 2012, Johnson took charge at Ashton Gate in February 2016 on a three-and-a-half-year deal after spells with Oldham Athletic and Barnsley.

This season, the 37-year-old achieved a place in the FA Cup last 16, ending an 18-year wait, before finishing eighth in the Championship – the club’s highest league finish in 11 years.

The Robins’ average 2018/19 home attendance of more than 21,000 was also the best for 40 years.

Johnson putting pen to paper for a four-year deal comes only a few days after his Bristol bears compatriot Pat Lam also signed a new deal at Ashton Gate.

Johnson said: “I’m delighted to have signed a new deal at Bristol City. I’m really looking forward to continuing the journey in our mission for success.

“I’d like to thank the Lansdown family, the board of directors, Mark Ashton, players and staff, as well as the fans for supporting me so much up to this point, and we now drive on. Come on you reds!”

City chief executive officer Mark Ashton said: “I’m thrilled Lee has committed his future to the club, the positive impact he’s already had is clear to see.

“I’ve worked with him for more than three years now and on a daily basis, I witness first hand his attitude, passion and professionalism towards the football club which is fantastic to see.

“He follows the same vision as the club, which is vital, and we will continue to work together to deliver our ultimate goal of promotion to the Premier League.”
