Match report: Bristol City Women 0-2 Birmingham City
A goal in either half saw Bristol City Women fall to a 2-0 defeat in bad weather conditions against Birmingham City at the SGS College Stoke Gifford Stadium.
Birmingham opened the scoring just five minutes in when Claudia Walker’s deflected cross fell to Lucy Whipp just inside the box, who’s effort was slightly deflected and looped into the top-left corner, leaving Sophie Baggaley with no chance.
Abbi Grant thought she had doubled the Blues lead ten minutes later when Lucy Stainforth put her in one-on-one, but she was deemed offside by the officials and her goal was disallowed.
is needed now More than ever
Alarm bells were ringing once again for the Robins just a minute after when Grant fired a shot towards goal from 20 yards – only to see it rebound off the crossbar.
Bristol City’s biggest chance of the half came through Ebony Salmon when she latched onto Olivia Chance’s through ball, cut onto her right foot and drilled an effort towards Hannah Hampton which was easily gathered by the keeper.
The visitors got their second 20 minutes after the restart when Grant’s first-time effort from the edge of the box skidded across the surface and unfortunately, through the arms of Baggaley.
Charlie Wellings was unlucky not to get a goal back for the Robins minutes later when her effort from the right side of the box beat Hampton but was cleared by Rebecca Holloway to stop it going over the line.
Bristol created a couple half-chances near the end of the game but unfortunately, they couldn’t find a way through the Birmingham defence to mount a comeback.
