Opening day of new season sees City draw and Rovers lose

By Martin Booth  Monday Aug 6, 2018

Andreas Weimann scored his first goal for Bristol City just five minutes into his debut against Nottingham Forest.

His first half header from Niclas Eliasson’s cross saw City take the lead, but Forest fought back in the second period to earn a 1-1 draw in the first game of the new Championship season at Ashton Gate.

“It was a great feeling after a really good start,” Weimann told bcfc.co.uk.

“We even had a couple of good chances before that but it was nice to get my first goal on my debut.”

Bristol Rovers started their League One campaign losing 2-1 away to Peterborough United.

Tom Lockyer scored late on for the Gas, with manager Darrell Clarke handing debuts to summer signings Alex Rodman and Ed Upson.

“I don’t care if it’s the first game of the season, our first 45 minutes weren’t acceptable,” said Clarke after the match.

The clearly frustrated manager called the first half performance “flakey” and “soft”, but said he hopes to bolster his squad with at least one new signing this week.

City travel to Bolton Wanderers in the league on August 11 before starting their Carabao Cup campaign against Plymouth Argyle at Ashton Gate on August 14.

Rovers’ first home game of the season is against Accrington Stanley on August 11, with Crawley Town the visitors to the Memorial Stadium on August 14 in the Carabao Cup.
