Rovers face trip to Stamford Bridge
Bristol Rovers have earned themselves a glamorous cup tie against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the second round of the EFL Cup.
The trip comes as a result of Wednesday night’s 1-0 victory over Championship side Cardiff City in the first round of the EFL Cup – the newly rebranded League Cup.
Rovers came out deserved winners in a tight game which went to extra time after a scoreless 90 minutes. The deadlock was finally broken in the 108th minute when 30-year-old Pirates midfielder Chris Lines, a graduate of the Bristol Rovers youth system, sent a rocket of a strike past Cardiff keeper Simon Moore.
is needed now More than ever
The result also effects rivals Bristol City, who will now face League One Scunthorpe United in the second round. Due to the EFL Cup’s seeding system, had Cardiff beaten Rovers, it would have been City facing a trip to Stamford Bridge.
Both second round ties are due to take place in the week starting August 22.
