‘The King is dead, long live the King’
So, in the end we got Lee. Little Lee as I have referred to him up until this day, but no more. Johnson Jr – I won’t call him that either – was announced last Saturday as our new boss after being pictured sitting alongside Lansdown away at Charlton.
We won that game, and I’ll come to that later, but the announcement filled the blogs and social media pages concerning the club for that evening and the days to follow. Its fair to say the majority of the musings were not entirely supportive, and some were quite, well, to the contrary.
I myself spoke of my concerns last week in this blog highlighting specifically the reception he might get from some sections of the crowd. But, as I feel all football fans should repeat to themselves on a regular basis, we are where we are. We have a new boss, no other choice to support him one hundred percent. The King is dead, long live the King.
is needed now More than ever
So, now the positives. Lee Johnson has already described himself as Marmite as a player, meaning some people loved and some hated him. I guess I was closer to loved but, as with actual Marmite, I just felt broadly positive towards him. He was a gifted player, good passer, a little lightweight but excellent with a dead ball.
His management record is decent, OK, not overwhelming. Having said this, he has gone into his two previous clubs, Oldham and Barnsley, at times of relative crisis and done well. He certainly talks a good game.
He knows the club. I am not too sure of how big a deal this is, but everyone keeps repeating it so I though I’d echo their words.
And, finally (and in all honestly I think this is the reason I and other fans can remain optimistic) Lee is joining us as head coach. This means the rest of the backroom staff have remained the same. Including, of course, John Pemberton and Wade Elliot – who have done pretty well since Cotterill’s departure. And Keith Burt remains in charge of recruitment.
So, welcome Lee. Good luck. Obviously I hope all the naysayers are eating their words come the end of the season.
We played well against Charlton on Saturday, by all accounts. Friends have told me it was not a remarkable game, but that we defended well and looked pretty comfortable.
We have a tough game up this Saturday at home to Ipswich, lets get behind Lee and the team and get those three points to take us further away from the relegation zone
