Basketball for kids comes to Bristol

By May Morton  Wednesday May 15, 2019

Children in Bristol will have the opportunity to shoot some hoops and learn how to slam dunk as Slam Jam comes to schools and community locations this May.

Slam Jam is a new grassroots programme from Basketball England and will give primary school children the chance try the sport.

“Slam Jam will help us reach a significant number of children in Bristol who are yet to play basketball,” said Stewart Kellet, Basketball England’s chief executive.

Aimed at 7 to 11 year olds, children can try out basketball and learn the basic skills and techniques.  The programme aims to get 180,000 children in the UK to pick up a ball and practice catching, throwing, running and dribbling. Each session lasts for 45 minutes and the programmes run for six to twelve weeks.

Children have helped to design Slam Jam

“Enjoyment should be at the heart of any playing experience and therefore we’ve ensured that the children themselves have been involved in its creation.  We’re looking forward to creating some life-long players and fans of basketball,” said Kellet.

Children have helped to design the sessions, choosing the mascots and characters and developing the games and drills used in the sessions.

“Slam Jam offers those that are not already part of the basketball family the opportunity to pick up a ball and begin to learn the skills involved in our fantastic sport,” said Georgia Jones, who plays basketball for Team England.

“The most important thing to remember about basketball is that it is fun,” said Georgia. “Slam Jam makes the most of this through enjoyable and engaging sessions that will help children fall in love with the sport and hopefully encourage them to find and join their local basketball club.”
