By Joel Osborne  Tuesday Apr 30, 2019

Under the guidance of coach Gareth Till, the Bristol Flyers Women basketball team has flourished, with highlights including new players Flo Ward and Cristina Bigica among the league’s leading scorers.

In light of this, Till has has been named the Women’s National Basketball League’s (WNBL) Division One coach of the year. The award is deserved recognition of a brilliant season for the team under Gareth’s lead, where they claimed the WNBL title with a  15 wins and just three losses.

“It’s a real honour to be named coach of the year. There are some outstanding coaches in the league and to be recognised by them means a great deal,” said Till.

Bristol Flyers Women with coach Gareth Till

Since their resurgence to the national league in 2015, Bristol Flyers Women have quickly become one of the leading female Basketball teams in the South West. With future developments in junior and senior basketball, they are eager to establish themselves as a leading female club in British basketball.

Till said: “The award is a reflection on the team and how well we played throughout the season. Without their dedication we wouldn’t have had the success we’ve enjoyed.”

It’s a timely reward for Till, who’s also announced he’s stepping down from his position as Women’s head coach due to family commitments. “I’ve stepped down as head coach to concentrate on the birth of my first chid, which is due in July.

“I couldn’t have wished for a better way to sign off with a league championship. I’ll still be working behind the scenes to help the women’s and girls programme to drive it forward.”
