There’s another Bristol sports team playing Manchester in the cup
With all the headlines surrounding Bristol City’s games against both Manchester United and Manchester City in the latter stages of the Carabao Cup, another Bristol club riding high with games against a side in Manchester is getting somewhat overlooked.
Bristol Handball Club ladies team will be competing in the National Cup against Manchester this weekend.
is needed now More than ever
Established in 2006, the club now consists of 40 members from Britain, Denmark, Spain, Hungary, France, Romania, Portugal, Poland and Lithuania.
The ladies team has had two games so far this season, losing at Reading in the opening game and beating Stroud on Sunday.
One of their players, Molly, will be making her debut on Sunday at 17 and has played with the England under-18s.
Club chairman Mike Pacy said: “There’s growing participation in the sport and there’s some real talent starting to emerge through England youth academies.”
Nina, who has been playing handball since the age of four and will be competing in the match on Saturday, said that the team has really grown and improved over the last year.
She said: “We were a bit of a haphazard team, with a number of enthusiastic players, but no direction. We now have a brilliant coach, Casper Fons, who has really given us the drive we needed, and I’m confident that we have a good chance of winning our game against Manchester.”
As well as working with schools, Bristol Handball Club hopes to start developing some young talent of their own by running youth training sessions, starting on January 20 at the City Academy.
“We’d love to see some of our young players go on to play with the National sides,” says Mike.
The team train twice a week at City Academy and play their games at Princess Royal Sports Complex in Wellington, and are currently trying to find a suitable venue in Bristol.
