Both Bristol teams narrowly beaten in Power8 Sprints

By Martin Booth  Sunday Jul 22, 2018

Hundreds of spectators lined the walls of the Floating Harbour to watch some of England’s best rowers compete in the inaugural Power8 Sprints.

Eight teams representing eight cities took part in the straight knock-out format, with Bristol’s men’s and women’s teams both reaching the final but being beaten into second place.

Over the fast 350m course, Manchester won the men’s race while Oxford were the women winners.

Taking part for the first time as part of the Harbour Festival, races began from close to the SS Great Britain with teams of eight rowers and one cox racing each other to the finish next to Brunel’s Buttery.

The new rowing concept from organisers British Rowing was broadcast live on BT Sport and the BBC Sport website with the use of a huge drone flying overhead.

Spectators in Bristol were able to watch proceedings on the water and on big screens close to the M Shed, where the two winning teams were presented with their trophy at a podium on Museum Square.
