Bristol to get first purpose-built padel courts

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jul 14, 2022

The world’s fastest growing sport is coming to Bristol.

Padel – a hybrid of tennis and squash – is always played by four people on an enclosed court slightly less than a third of the size of a tennis court.

The largest padel centre in the South West will be built in north Bristol, with Padel4all creating four state-of-the-art outdoor, covered padel courts.

The courts will be located at Lockleaze Sports Centre, where there will be full and extensive coaching programmes, introductory courses for beginners and community outreach initiatives to make the sport accessible for all.

Padel4all CEO and founder, Christopher Wilkinson, said: “Padel is a highly enjoyable sport for all. It is super easy to learn, ideal for any age (from six) and ability and is as much fun as it is great for fitness and wellbeing.

“We were excited to build a centre in Bristol, which has a thriving sporting heritage and a cosmopolitan community keen to try new and interesting things.”

Lockleaze Sports Centre CEO, Tony Wright, said that he is “delighted to be the home of what will be Bristol’s only padel centre”.

“It is great to be in partnership with Padel4all, who has been involved in the creation of our four courts.

“We are receiving daily interest in this innovative addition to sport in Bristol, both from the local Lockleaze community and from across the city.”

Verde of Warmley are the principal contractors and designers for the project, with business manager Jon Bland saying that the Verde team “are delighted to be working in partnership with Padel4All to install the first padel centre in the region.

Bland said: “As a Bristol based company, it’s brilliant to be able to contribute to the community and give the South West a unique and bespoke venue for a rapidly growing sport.”

The courts are due to open on August 1.
