Bristol’s Claudia Fragapane wins BBC award
Bristol gymnast Claudia Fragapane has capped a stunning year by winning the BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year for 2014.
The 17-year-old became the first British woman in 84 years to win four gold medals at one Commonwealth Games.
“I would just like to thank everyone for your support,” said Fragapane at the ceremony in Glasgow last night.
“I’d like to thank my mum and dad because they’ve been so supportive.”
The teenage sensation from Longwell Green trains at the Bristol Hawks Gymnastics Club in Easton and trained by the club’s founder Elaine May.
Fragapane’s Commonwealth gold medal haul was the best British performance since the 1930 Games in Canada, when Joyce Cooper triumphed in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 440-yard freestyle relay and the 440-yard freestyle.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton has been voted the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014.
The 29-year-old Mercedes driver won his second Formula 1 world title this season and joined an exclusive club by becoming the fourth Briton to win the drivers’ championship at least twice.
