Boxing charity wins national award

By Rebecca Hurford  Monday Mar 9, 2020

Easton-based boxing charity, Empire Fighting Chance, has received a national award.

The charity has changed young lives across the city and has been selected as one of the winners of the 2020 GSK IMPACT Award, presented by The King’s Fund.

Charities win for exceptional work in improving the welfare and health of communities in the UK and receive £30,000 and leadership expansion from experts.

Empire Fighting Chance supports young people who have suffered from mental health issues, who are struggling with school or who have been involved in criminal activity.  The charity offers a range of activities, such as mentoring, therapy and education and career support.

Charity CEO Martin Bisp said that the award “has given the entire team a huge boost, especially the coaches who work with some of the most vulnerable young people day in, day out.”

The boxing charity helps over more than 4,000 children a year, with each coach trained to a high level so that they can give psychological support.

“We were particularly struck by the range of services it provides, offering a comprehensive support network for young people that extends far beyond non-contact boxing to help people overcome the challenges of poverty, poor housing and unemployment,” said Katie Pinnock, director of UK and Ireland Charitable Partnerships at GSK.
