Lord Mayor among thousands of runners to take part in Bristol 10K
Bristol’s Lord Mayor and more than 900 students and staff from the city’s two universities will be among the 13,000 runners who taking part in Sunday’s Simplyhealth Great Bristol 10K.
Both the University of Bristol and UWE Bristol signed up for the race as part of a new Varsity challenge.
Lord Mayor Cleo Lake will fire the starting gun on Sunday morning before tackling the distance herself for the first time.

“I was inspired by the Bristol Girls Can movement and wanted to get fitter by training for the 10K while also raising funds for the National Caribbean Monument Charity who wish to erect a monument at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire,” Lake told Bristol24/7.
“I haven’t really thought about what time I want to finish it in. But I’m really looking forward to it!”
The university group will start in one mass red wave, wearing matching red t-shirts.
Tim Sansum, from the estate’s team at the University of Bristol, is one of the runners taking part in the Varsity challenge and will be running a 10K for the fifth time.
The 64-year-old said: “Bristol always has the best atmosphere. The crowd just pulls you along. You don’t have to be young to take part. It’s life-changing, and the new running club has completely transformed the university.”

Joining Tim will be Grace Kendrick, who is studying a Master’s Degree in Law at the University of Bristol and last weekend completed the London Marathon in aid of Healthy Minds, Bristol Uni’s mental health service.
Grace said: “Our running clubs really highlight the importance of running for mental health, as well as connecting students and staff.”
