Olympic gold medalist to lead Bristol team in new rowing race
When an innovative new city versus city rowing race launches at this summer’s Harbour Festival, the Bristol crew will be led by an Olympic champion.
Matt Gotrel, who grew up in Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds and won gold as part of the men’s eight at Rio 2016, is Bristol’s team captain at the Power8 Sprints on July 22.
Bristol will wear yellow at the first Power8 event, which will see eight cities made up of men’s and women’s teams compete over a 350m course on the Floating Harbour, much shorter and faster than the 2km at the Olympics.
is needed now More than ever
“The Power8 Sprints is a great new concept for rowing and one I’m excited to be a part of,” former international sailor Gotrel said as the City Champions were revealed in Bristol.
“Being here today to represent the Bristol crews and unveil our new crew colour has made me more eager to support my crew as they train for the big event and I hope that people from the city will get behind us in the lead up to the races in July.”
British Rowing CEO Andy Parkinson added: “We’re delighted to be able to announce such high-profile and decorated City Champions for the 2018 Power8 Sprints.
“Our eight City Champions are just the tip of the iceberg as each crew is packed with great British rowing talent. I’m sure that the friendly rivalry between all the city squads will start to build up to the event in July.”
