Professional boxing could be staged in shopping centre loading bay
In 2019, Bristol mayor Marvin Rees helped bring international boxing to City Hall.
But if you think that was an unusual place for pugilism, one of Bristol’s most well-respected boxers, who is now a trainer and promoter, is planning to bring the noble art to the loading bay within the basement of a city centre shopping centre.
Jamie Sanigar hopes to put on British Boxing Board of Control sanctioned events in the space which has most recently been used for parties hosted by Alfresco Disco.
is needed now More than ever
If Sanigar’s application to Bristol City Council is successful, the space underneath the Galleries, accessed via Fairfax Street, will be used to host bouts every few months.
Promoted by CS Boxing Ltd, the events will be known as ‘Bristol Fight Club’ and be a continuation of the fights that Sanigar used to promote at Whitchurch Sports Centre.
As well as the boxing, the events beneath the Galleries could also feature live bands as well as a bar and food.
As a boxer, Sanigar represented England. He fought 31 pro fights and won the Southern Area Title.
He later founded Bristol Boxing Gym, now based on Lower Ashley Road in Easton, and is the co-founder of Empire Fighting Chance.
CS Boxing’s full application to Bristol City Council reads: “International professional boxing event licenced by the British Boxing Board of Control. The event usually consists of between 8-12 contests. All persons participating in these events will be fully licenced by the British Boxing Board of control.
“Our standard set-up includes a ring which is barriered from the public. Allocated ringside seating, allocated ringside tables with seating and an unreserved seating area. The events are ticket admission only with security. The event will be held in the loading bay in the basement are of the Galleries shopping centre.
“We like to promote on Friday or Saturday nights. Standard times are doors open 17:30 and cease boxing at 23:00. We intend to promote approximately 4-6 events annually.”
