Bristol world champion Jane Couch to be inducted into Boxing Hall of Fame
A Bristol world champion who was the UK’s first licensed female boxer will be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame for her contributions to the sport.
Jane Couch took on the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) after they denied women a boxing license, winning her right to formally compete in 1998.
Spending most of her boxing career in Bristol until her retirement from the sport in 2007, Couch won five world titles and was awarded an MBE for her services to boxing.
is needed now More than ever
After the news was announced, Couch tweeted: “39 pro fights, five world titles legalised boxing in the UK. Now a hall of famer. No more to be said. Gamechanger.”
Couch, 55, who grew up in Lancashire before moving to Bristol, has inspired a whole generation of female boxers across the world.
She broke the bar on female boxers, which the BBBC had previously justified for its risk of “premenstrual tension that makes them more emotional and more accident-prone”.
Couch will join the Boxing Hall of Fame class of 2024 alongside other boxers including Ricky Hatton, Michael Moorer, Ivan Calderon and Diego Corrales.
