Lloyd kicks Bears to scrappy win at Gloucester

By Martin Booth  Friday Feb 12, 2021

Try scorer Jake Heenan said that his Bristol Bears side “made hard work” of their trip to Kingsholm.

But thanks to the Kiwi’s first try of the season and the steady boot of Ioan Lloyd, Bears beat Gloucester 18-17 to remain at the top of the Premiership table.

Lloyd’s 75th-minute penalty secured a late win, with Santiago Carreras scoring two interception tries for the cherry and whites after Bryan Byrne opened the scoring for the Bears.

Andy Uren made his 100th competitive appearance for the club against Gloucester on Friday night.

“We got the win, that’s the most important thing,” said Bears director of rugby, Pat Lam. “We’ve got to give credit to Gloucester, but we made it difficult for ourselves. Two intercepts almost cost us the game.”

“In fairness to Gloucester, they don’t go away and they’ve got some real talent, especially in the backs and they really punished us with the intercepts,” Heenan said.

“We have to be better than that on the ball, but I think off the ball, we were really good on defence, but we have to be more clinical on the ball.

He added: “To graft out that win – we knew had it in us, even with a few minutes left – it’s just about keeping plugging away and trust that it will come.

“We know we’re not where we need to be, and we’ve got some big games coming up. We won’t get away with that all of the time.”
