Sensational Sinckler propels Bristol to record-breaking win at Bath

By Martin Booth  Saturday May 8, 2021

Pat Lam said that Bristol Bears are “blessed” to have Kyle Sinkler in their team after the prop put in a man-of-the-match performance in a record-breaking win at Bath.

Left out of the Lions squad, Sinkler said after the game that this week has been the most difficult of his life, not just within a sporting context.

“In a year or two’s time, I’ll look back on it and it will all make sense, but obviously at the moment, right now, it doesn’t make sense,” Sinckler said in an emotional interview with BT Sport.

“What I wanted to try and do was lead by example and show the kids. How easy would it have been for me to play the victim and say how bad it is…

“I’m just lucky that I’ve got a good support team around me. It’s just been tough. I just wanted to show the kids and everyone at home how much it means to me and lead by example, not just throw the toys out of the pram.

“Do the tough stuff, get on with it, use that anger. I’ve got so much anger inside me right now but (I wanted to) use it in a positive way and do what’s best for the team, do all the unselfish stuff and I think I did that today, and it’s good the boys got the win.”

An emotional Lam said that Sinckler “will continue to inspire people”, before former Lions player Ugo Monye struggled to hold back tears.

“I found that really tough,” said Monye. “I’ve never seen Kyle like that… Playing for the Lions is huge and I’m so pleased for everyone who has been selected.

“But equally I don’t think I’ve seen Kyle like that because he probably hasn’t hurt like that before. I’m just so pleased with how he’s come out today.”

Bristol’s 40-20 win at the Recreation Ground came after Lam’s men fought back from 15-0 down to secure a second successive league double against Bath.

Two tries from Max Malins, tries from Nathan Hughes, Charles Piutau and Ben Earl, and one penalty try, meant that the Bears have now secured their play-off place with four rounds of the Premiership remaining.
