Simi Pam scores on Barbarians debut in front of world record crowd
Bristol Bears fans already known all about Simi Pam and now the rugby world has seen her awe-inspiring talent.
The Bears loosehead prop scored a try on her debut for the Barbarians at Twickenham in front of a world record crowd for women’s rugby of 29,581 fans.
“I am in sheer disbelief at what has just happened,” tweeted Pam, who combines her rugby career with being a junior doctor.
is needed now More than ever
The Barbarians beat South Africa 60-5, with the women’s game becoming the main event at Twickenham and shown live on the BBC after the men’s match against Samoa was called off due to positive Covid tests.
Pam has been regularly scoring tries for Bristol in the Allianz Premier 15s this season and continued that form for the Barbarians, diving over the line from the back of a ruck in her blue and white hooped Bears socks.
The Baa-Baas were founded in 1890 to bring together players from different clubs across the world, with their ethos of attacking rugby seeing Pam also involved with this NFL-style try:
As well as the odd socks, another Barbarians tradition is to always pick an uncapped player – with Pam that player versus South Africa on Saturday.
Pam was a shotputter and a sprinter before taking up rugby during her medical studies at the University of Bristol.
She has since become a role model for many women, and has also been vocal in her own experiences of racism and for the importance of diversity.
