Wurzels bring exuberant end to disappointing Bristol season
The Wurzels played in front of a raucous crowd between Ashton Gate Stadium and its car park on Saturday evening.
Following Bristol’s 36-25 win against Gloucester, it was a rare outing for Wurzels song Blackbird. which is sung by the players after a victory.
The scrumpy & western classic has been sung all too infrequently during a disappointing season, which also ended with disappointment with Bristol not securing a place in next season’s Champions Cup thanks to finishing behind Bath on points difference.
is needed now More than ever
It was a day for singing, with the National Anthem played before kick-off to mark the king’s coronation just a few hours’ previously.
If it was about new beginnings for the country, here in Bear Country new beginnings are much-needed but we’ll have to wait until September to see them.
Replacing the departing Charles Piatau – who was yellow carded in the final play of this game for a deliberate knock-on – the returning Max Malins will certainly make a difference in the backline, despite Piatau being nigh-on irreplaceable.
Piatau was among numerous Bears saying goodbye on Saturday. Some big names too, including another marquee player, Semi Radradra, who scored two tries in his final appearance; and Joe Joyce, who at least to got to run out on the BS3 turf one last time as a waterboy.
More Wurzels singing next year please, Bristol.
