Work starts to improve tennis courts across city
More than a dozen tennis courts in Eastville Park, St George Park and Canford Park are being improved to encourage more people to pick up a racket.
In the future, people wanting to play tennis on the courts in Eastville Park and Canford Park will be able to either pay per hour to book a court or purchase an annual pass to use the courts.
Any money generated will be put towards ensuring that the courts can be maintained more regularly and kept to a high standard. Members of the public will still have free access to the courts at certain times in the week.
is needed now More than ever
People at St George Park currently pay to use their courts but will also be able to access them by using an online booking system once the refurbishment work is completed. The West of England Sport Trust (Wesport) has been named as the provider who will operate and maintain these courts.
Bristol City Council cabinet member for sport, Kye Dudd, said: “We want to make sure everyone can access good quality sports facilities across the city to try and get more people active and encourage more local sporting talent.
“These tennis courts are well in need of refurbishment and this work will mean we put in place a system to make sure they can be regularly maintained and that future generations will be able to access good quality courts in their local park.”
LTA regional tennis manager Julie Jones added: “We are excited to be working with Bristol City Council on this new investment that will see much needed improvements made to 15 public tennis courts across the city.
“The new facilities, coupled with the easier-to-use booking and access systems will help to safeguard the future of tennis within Bristol and make each venue sustainable, meaning even more people in the community will be able to play the sport they love all year round.”
The council is currently looking to see if it might be possible to introduce similar schemes to other parks across the city.
