The best places to exercise: City vs University gyms
As a regular gym goer, gym facilities were of huge importance to me when I first moved to Bristol.
I had to weigh up different options to ensure my student loan was well spent and that I could get the most out of what I could afford.

One of the primary reasons you might opt for a city gym versus a university gym is if you want to still have a membership when you go home for the holidays. During summer, university students spend a large chunk of time at home. If you’re someone who works out very often, it will be important for you to have a membership you can use at a gym near university and a gym near your home city.
You’ll be less likely to bump into an ex or an awkward one night stand
One of the great things about going to a gym separate from your university is that you are way less likely to bump into anyone you may know. Of course, there’s no guarantee you won’t have an awkward encounter, but it is definitely less likely.
You can go any time – day or night
Many gyms in the city allow 24-hour access with their basic membership. This allows students the freedom to go to the gym at any time and to fit working out around their studies and other extra curricular priorities.
University gyms
A wide range of sports facilities
The university gyms not only have well-stocked gym and weights rooms, but also allow members access to other facilities they have on site. For example, some UoB memberships allow access to the swimming pool and tennis courts, while the UWE Active Card membership offers unlimited time in the squash courts and on the climbing wall. Uni gyms also offer coaching in these fields for anyone looking to improve their skills.
Meet new people
While some may wish to avoid people at all costs in the gym, it can be a great way to meet new people. There are loads of classes and societies that use gym space to get involved in – from legs, bums and tums to circuit sessions. As a first year student this can be a great opportunity to meet people with similar interests and hobbies.
Affordability
If you are someone who really wants to join a gym but cannot afford the city gym prices, the university gym offers basic memberships which can be super affordable. However, these come with restrictions such as when you can go and what you can do while you’re there.
No matter what gym you choose, exercise is great for stress and mental wellbeing, and has honestly saved my sanity during busy exam seasons.
