Student-friendly restaurants
Yes, students are rumoured to live on baked beans and Pot Noodles, but it doesn’t mean we can’t eat out from time to time. I’ve found that student life provides you with a new skillset when deciding where to eat: we hunt for affordable deals with good value, great taste and winning prices. Found over the last two years in Bristol, here are some of my favourite places to eat.
Rosa
85 Whiteladies Road, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 2NT
www.rosabristol.co.uk
From the outside, Rosa doesn’t look like the most student-friendly restaurant, but one look at the prices will tell you that it is. They serve a variety of small tapas dishes inspired by various different cultures, that chop and change on a regular basis. The dishes may look small, but they are incredibly filling, and you’re only charge £12 for three plates at lunchtime and £14 for three plates at dinner: well within a student’s price range. Furthermore, the chilled yet classy vibe makes it the perfect place to bring your parents when they come to visit you.
I recommend ordering six to nine plates between a group of you and having a bit of everything, and that paired with a jug of their amazing sangria makes for a slightly classy but mostly comfortable evening out.
is needed now More than ever
Bosco
96 Whiteladies Road, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 2QX
29 Regent Street, Clifton Village, Bristol, BS8 4HR
www.boscopizzeria.co.uk
You may have had pizza, but you certainly haven’t had a Bosco pizza. There’s something about their Italian authenticity that sets their pizzas above the rest. As well as pizza, Bosco serve pasta and a range of starters with the mains priced from around £9 to £13, sticking to our student price range. This is definitely the sort of place where a student should go to treat themselves, be that in the form of a cute date or a chatty post-essay meal with friends.
Three Brothers Burgers
Welsh Back, Bristol, BS1 4SB
www.threebrothersburgers.co.uk
For hearty food right by the harbourside (sitting on a docked boat), Three Brothers Burgers is the place to go. On entering the boat you are transported to an American diner, with the likes of chilli cheese fries, manchego dogs and thick (and sometimes alcoholic) milkshakes on the menu. However, the real student appeal lies in their burger deal, in which you can present your student card to receive a chunky beef burger in a brioche bun with skin-on fries for just £5. The perfect student lunch when you’re feeling peckish and avoiding the responsibility of cooking.
The Ashville
15 Leigh Street, Bristol, BS3 1SN
www.theashville.co.uk
This is a real hidden gem. It’s a cosy pub-restaurant hybrid with pastel walls, woodwork and fairy lights. The portions are generous and the chips are chunky, giving you the perfect place to go when you’re craving home cooking. Though the steaks can get quite pricy, you are able to grab a Sunday roast for £10.95, or enjoy their lunch menu where every option is under £10.
