Unfortunately, not everyone at university has a great time all the time. There can be problems with stress and loneliness, health, housing or debt. Here are some places you can turn to for help when things aren’t going so well.
Avon & Bristol Law Centre
Free legal advice and, where necessary, representation on a whole range of issues, including discrimination, housing, employment, health and mental health, welfare benefits and more.
Bristol Drugs Project
One of five organisations delivering ROADS, Bristol’s service for adults seeking help with drug or alcohol problems. Confidential and accessible advice is available to those who feel they have a problem themselves and to those who are affected by someone else’s drug or alcohol use.
Bristol Mindline 
Free and confidential phone helpline for those experiencing mental health issues which operates from Wed-Sun between 8pm and midnight.
Bristol University Accommodation Office 
You may well have already come across the Accommodation Office when arranging somewhere to live in your first year, but the service can also provide help finding accommodation throughout your time here and, in some cases, beyond.
Bristol University Counselling Service
Offers counselling support through supported self-help, individual sessions, workshops and therapy groups. Drop-in service runs on Weds from 2.45-3.45pm.
Brook Bristol
City-centre sexual health clinic for young people where you can talk confidentially to a nurse, youth worker or councillor about contraception, pregnancy, sex, relationships and health.
Citizen’s Advice Bureau
Free, impartial advice and information on a range of issues, including employment, debt and housing. The city-centre advice point offers a drop-in service, and there are similar CAB drop-ins in Southmead, Knowle and Hartcliffe. The national website (
www.adviceguide.org.uk) also carries information about the main areas of advice CAB deal with.
Samaritans
Round-the-clock helpline service for anyone in crisis or with a difficult issue they want to discuss: completely confidential and non-judgemental, Samaritans will listen and won’t skirt around the issue, no matter how difficult.
St Paul’s Advice Centre
Advice and information on a range of issues for anyone living in Ashley ward and East Bristol.
Terrence Higgins Trust
Major provider of services relating to sexual health, including help for those diagnosed with HIV/Aids, as well as information about sexual health and testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
Self Injury Support
Formerly Bristol Crisis Service for Women, Self Injury Support supports girls and women affected by self-injury or self-harm. Runs the TESS text and email support service, the CASS self-injury helpline and provides publications and information about self-injury.
UWE Accommodation Office

Runs a freephone 24-hour helpline for women experiencing abuse and domestic violence of any kind.
