Students take part in ten hours of sport for charity

By Georgia Watts  Friday Mar 22, 2019

The University of Bristol’s annual Ignit10n fundraising event returned on Thursday, with eager students participating in ten hours of non-stop sporting activities for charity.

Taking place at Royal Fort Gardens, in the heart of Clifton, Ignit10n aimed to raise £10,000 for Above & Beyond, a local charity that supports Bristol city centre hospitals. This marks the sixth consecutive year that the initiative has raised money for them and students have specified for the money to be spent on hospitals’ mental health services.  Students’ mental health has been a topical discussion in recent years and is a subject close to many, especially in Bristol, following the recent loss of young people studying at the university.

Sports ranged from volleyball and fencing to salsa dancing and korfball, a Dutch game that has similarities to netball and basketball. 24-hours of tennis and an overnight badminton match also featured in the sporting extravaganza. The event finishes with a tour of every Mission Burrito restaurant in the south west by a student cycling group.

A fierce game of vollyball

Campus Heart partnered with Ignit10n for the first time this year. The university’s development programme, it aims to provide students and staff with more space and opportunities to connect.

The student organiser and chair of Sports Network, Ed Hanson, started planning the event in October, saying: “The most exciting event is probably archery, which is new this year. Don’t worry, that’s in a safe space away from people!”

With students that are so passionate about improving mental health and the university encouraging young people to connect through Campus Heart and the new Sofa Self-Care project with Off The Record, positive changes are always coming and students’ experiences of university are constantly being improved.

A successful balancing act
