UWE Bristol named in top ten most ‘hipster’ universities in UK
A survey conducted by student accommodation provider Liberty Living has determined the top ten ‘coolest’ universities in the UK, and UWE Bristol is one of them.
According to the survey of more than 3,000 students, 52 per cent of them said that they would rather attend a ‘cool’ university than one more academic.
In addition, 76 per cent said that a city’s ‘coolness’ influenced their decision of where they chose to study, with one in seven saying it was the deciding factor.

UWE Bristol was considered one of the most hipster universities in the UK
To help determine the ‘coolest’ and most ‘hipster’ universities, the survey also ranked the top ten based on the number of record shops, craft beer pubs, vintage clothes shops, and the Art & Design score from the Complete University Guide.
Looking at the rankings, a high number of craft beer pubs (48 per cent) was the top reason for a university being considered ‘cool’.
This was followed by the number of record shops (29 per cent), and a thriving art scene (23 per cent). Art & Design degrees were voted joint ‘coolest’ degree type with Sciences, followed by Fashion.
So, who came out on top?
The victory was claimed by Manchester Metropolitan University, with the best craft beer pubs and record shops. Newcastle and Liverpool also rank highly with two universities appearing in the top ten, and Newcastle University is recognised with the best Art & Design degrees.
UWE Bristol just missed out on taking the title of best craft beer with 38, just shy of Manchester’s 40, and the University of Brighton takes the lead for best for vintage shops.

Manchester Metropolitan University took the top spot
A spokesperson at Liberty Living said: “The social and cultural aspect of attending university is as important as achieving a degree for many people.
“The prevalence of new universities on our list is due to the strength these institutions have when it comes to creative subjects, as well as the opportunity for a broader cultural experience in vibrant and eclectic cities.”
According to Liberty Living, the top ten coolest universities were:
1. Manchester Metropolitan University
2. University of Leeds
3. Newcastle University
4. Nottingham Trent University
5. Liverpool John Moores University
6. UWE
7. University of Brighton
