I, the Poet. You, the Poet.

Date: Monday, Aug 21 2017 - Saturday, Aug 26 2017
Venue: SPACE
Artists
Laurie Cole, Biba Cole

Sisters Laurie and Biba Cole combine poetry with photography, paintings and choreographed videos, blending different mediums into a cohesive whole and exploring how, for example, a small piece of written verse can evolve into something visual.

Poetry, and the process of writing is vital to both artists’ individual practice. Biba uses the act of writing poetry as a form of sketching; a preliminary observation on which every visual artwork she creates is based. She progresses from written language using physical experimentation, whether it is in movement, costume, sound, or painting. Laurie creates fragmented narratives derived from everyday surroundings.

“Similar to that of free verse, she works instinctively to what she feels is right and wrong. By illuminating the smallest of moments she creates environments that play and explore the human figure and written words. This exhibition then showcases theprocess between writing, development, and visual arts.

“Much like a game of consequences, each artist writes poems for the other to respond to. The viewer is lead around the exhibition with an accompanying zine, featuring selected poems and developmental artwork.
