Ceramics by Lucy Baxendale

Date: Friday, Feb 1 2019 - Saturday, Mar 30 2019
Venue: Potters

New functional ceramic pieces and ceramic art by this artist based in Hereford.

Lucy specialises in creating porcelain sculptures and functional ranges with a playful edge, usually resulting from illustrations she’s created.

Lucy is originally from a small town in County Durham but moved to Hereford to study a degree in Contemporary Applied Arts in 2008, and has lived here ever since. She currently teaches the Ceramics evening course at Hereford College of Arts, as well as working as an Arts practitioner for Wyldwood Arts C.I.C.

Illustration and drawing are very important in Lucy’s practice, so she also runs a monthly Drawing Club, which is open to everyone of any ability/age on the quest to make sketching sociable.

Lucy Baxendale is an explorer of imaginary worlds, inspired by folklore, mythology, ritual and traditions.

Using a form of a surrealist automatism, she draws from her unconscious to produce drawings which often become the inspiration for her ceramic work. She is curious about how you choose to translate a 2D drawing into a 3D form and pushes herself to build challenging structures in porcelain, using a variety of different hand building techniques.

Her unusual homeware range comes from her desire to add playfulness to function, inspired by the imaginary world in her head.
