Woman’s Hour Craft Prize
Exhibition showcasing the most innovative and exciting craft practice in the UK today.
Woman’s Hour Craft Prize is an exhibition from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (V&A) marking the 70th anniversary of BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, created in partnership with the BBC and Crafts Council. The exhibition in Bristol is sponsored by National Friendly.
Twelve finalists were selected from 1,500 applications by a panel of 29 experts, and the chosen pieces indicate the broad spectrum of craft practice today, from woven willow and darned jumpers to a bespoke bicycle and intricate jewellery boxes.
is needed now More than ever
Clay artist Phoebe Cummings was named the winner of the £10,000 prize. As well as being beautiful and technically excellent, the show explores the decline of UK manufacturing, advances in medicine and personal stories of loss and memory.
Alongside the exhibition, a ‘Make Space’ will showcase work by Bristol makers and host an ever-changing series of mini displays and events throughout the exhibition. There will be opportunities to meet makers, watch demonstrations, browse and buy locally made work, and have a go at something creative. Several of the artists featured in the exhibition will also be running sessions and talks.
Exhibition tickets are re-usable so visitors can return for free as many times as they like.
Students and 16-25 year olds get free exhibition entry every Wednesday, plus 20% off books and £2 tea/coffee. Throughout July, all NHS employees get free entry to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the National Health Service.
July 7-Sept 2, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery.
