Greg Harris
Solo exhibition for this painter who strives to make us “reconnect with the familiar by bringing together both a literal and non-literal interpretation of the people and environment around us. Strokes and smears start off large before he feels forced to reduce to smaller tools, maintaining and displaying some (if not all) of the marks used to create a piece.
“Composition is always considered as paintings are brought to completion with the use of abstract marks, surface tension, and tone. Harris relies on arbitrary colours and varied instruments to approximate areas of an image, which requires careful attention to ensure the eye can comfortably rove around the painting (so there are no ‘dead-ends’).
“His source material comes from first-hand photographs or images he gathers from books or online, and the paintings take place alone in the studio. Once Harris begins, he adapts the palette and trusts his instincts to constantly reassess the work as it gains body.
is needed now More than ever
“An energetic and lively portrayal is achieved through choice of colours and a gestural style that doesn’t condemn what’s being depicted. Rather, through the execution and minimised mark-making, Harris’ paintings are brought to life with a clean and freshly finished feel.”
The exhibition brings together over 20 paintings from the last four years of Harris’ work. With a focus on portrait, figurative and landscape painting, these images explore the relevance of representative painting in the contemporary art scene.
