American Landscapes: Revisiting the Wilderness

Date: Monday, Sep 23 2019 - Sunday, Oct 6 2019
Venue: The Island

Exhibition arising from two three-month road trips taken by writer and artist Vernon Hewitt.

From August to November 2017 and November 2018 to January 2019, Hewitt travelled around the US to write a travel book and also to paint ‘wilderness’ – a generic obsession with American and British painters from the middle of the 19th century.

The trips produced a book called Journey Through The End Of Days: An American Road Trip which featured some of the acrylic paintings in this exhibition – and about 40 paintings since then.
