Jo Nathan: Outside In(Side) Out
New exhibition at Other Worlds are Possible, a new shop and gallery selling original art, gifts, curios, furniture and good ideas (free), and based in the old Corn Exchange of St Nicks Market.
The shop has original artworks by local artists Sara Glass and Sophia Hughes, demon potter Simon Melican and sculptor Paul Wilson – plus Shrigley mugs and water bottles, radical tea towels and greetings cards.
The debut show is from Jo Nathan.

“These paintings are part of a series Outside In(Side) Out in, in which Jo tries to capture his sensory and emotional responses to a particular place at a specific moment – a place that excites and inspires in some way (Sharpness Port, pictured).
“I have developed a process through which I make a series of ‘blind’ monochrome charcoal drawings in situ that express my response to the place,” Jo explains.
“These drawings, together with my memory of the experience, create a starting point, and structure for, the production of abstract oil paintings in the studio. Sometimes the paintings remain true to their origin and sometimes other forms and meanings emerge through the process of painting.
“My hope is to create paintings that are layered and textured enough to do justice to my original experience of place, whilst remaining sufficiently ambiguous and abstract in their form to allow the viewer to project and discover their own meanings and forms in the image.”
