David Buss: The White Bicycle

Date: Friday, Jun 29 2018 - Tuesday, Jul 10 2018
Venue: Hamilton House
Artists
David Buss

Using the recurring motif of a white bicycle, Bristol-based David Buss creates photographic images that vary from the humorous to moving, surreal to abstract, documentary to ambiguous, and nostalgic to futuristic.

“Street photography is frequently dependent upon
chance or spontaneous encounters, as this
exhibition exemplifies,” David explains. “The White Bicycle: Variations
and Situations demonstrates and celebrates the love of bicycles of all types, size, age, and condition shared by so many individuals and communities.

“Bicycles serve not simply as a means of transport,
but also other various and often surprising uses such as an object to personalise, to express the identity of the owner, to promote a business, to serve as a memorial (known as ‘ghost bikes’), to be part of an art work, a status symbol, a signifier, to maintain as a piece of nostalgia, to communicate
information, and many more.

“Each image in this
exhibition contains at least one white bicycle and/or
at least one sign, symbol or other representation of a white bicycle. This may be the major feature of the image or an incidental fragment.

“Why white bicycles? My choice of motif had its
origin in the photograph of a white bicycle I shot in
the back streets of Sorrento, Italy.

“Initially, it was a one-off shot, but some time later I saw the potential for a project where a diverse range of images could become a cohesive whole through the repetition of a common motif.

The White Bicycle: Variations and Situations is now an ongoing photographic project. To date, I have gathered material from various parts of the UK, France, Spain, Italy, the USA, Canada, Laos and the Canary Islands. Using the recurring motif of a
white bicycle, I have endeavoured to create images that intentionally range from the humorous to the moving, from surreal to abstract, from documentary to ambiguous, from nostalgic to futuristic, or various
permutations of these.”

June 29-July 10, Hamilton House Gallery, Mon-Fri 9am-8.30pm / Sat and Sun 9am-4.30pm.
