Street photography workshop St Mark’s Road
Want to tell a story with your photos?
Bristol24/7 promotes local photos and photography through our monthly Instagram showcase and, more recently, reader photo of the month – which is now the centre page spread of our monthly magazine.
We’ve teamed up with local street photographer Colin Moody to host this workshop on one of Bristol’s cultural crown jewels: St Mark’s Road in Easton – and we may even publish a few of your best pictures.
is needed now More than ever
By taking part in this workshop you will help fund Better Bristol projects and we will be running similar workshops with people who may not otherwise have access to these opportunities.
Is this workshop for me?
This is for anyone interested in learning more about the power of photography – whether you have a smartphone or the latest DSLR. Beginners definitely welcome.
As a group you will be peering into hidden corners and searching for the true spirit of this unique neighbourhood. Colin will teach you how to use a camera to capture an essence or respond to the feeling of a person or place.
The workshop will introduce new techniques for capturing urban life as Colin shares his own approach to the art of street photography.
He will help you to amplify your own voice, or teach you how to go about doing that for the diverse communities and individuals you meet. Learn to see the value of placemaking through photo works and be guided in how you can do this in your practice.
What skills will I learn?
– How to get better dynamic story telling shots, putting a story or report sequence together or how to use your camera to express the feeling you get from people and places you meet.
– When to shoot wide or go in close, the techniques needed when approaching anyone or any topic.
– How to portion images better, when to crop when not, how to use colour
– Develop techniques for engaging with people and groups you want to work with and/or how to use images to represent a story, a life, a community or a feeling of place.
What should I bring?
– Any camera: film or digital or phone
– An image / photo of something you like or dislike. Ideally one that represents a passion of yours, or a sense of place
About Colin Moody
“The social environment, spaces and events in Bristol and the wider world are my main fascinations. I report on these for local media and national press.
“After graduating from the London College of Printing with a BA (HONS) in Graphic Media Design in 1996, I worked as an art department assistant and graphic designer for 5 years. My work can be seen in a number of films and TV shows including Bridget Jones’ Diary. Since moving to Bristol in 2009 I have been photographing the city and its people.
My first book is out now, next in 2020.
