BS3’s brilliant annual street art festival returns, with artists from Bristol and much further afield descending on Southville, Bedminster and Ashton to paint walls and hoardings during the daytimes, plus live music, family activities, and much more.
This year’s features include a tie-in with The Simpsons, which means that festivalgoers will be treated to interpretations of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie et al by world-renowned artists including Nomad Clan, Hong Kong artist Bao Ho and veteran Bristol graffer Soker. The three artists have been selected by The Simpsons creator Matt Groening to bring the much-loved characters to life in their own unique styles.
Other big names to watch out for include Brazil’s L7M, whose inspirations include the beauty of life and the disarray of the city, and two Upfest newcomers: Connecticut-based Arcy, known for his large-scale, paint-splashed style, and The London Police, creators of the instantly recognisable ‘LADS’ characters.
is needed now More than ever
High-profile graffers with strong Bristol links include Upfest 2018 Festival Artist Jody plus Inkie, Cheo, Soker, Voyder and Andy Council.
Elsewhere, Upfest marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the UK, working this year with Bristol Women’s Voice, an organisation aiming to make gender equality in the city a reality. Three female artists have been invited to create artworks exploring the themes of positive women and bravery. There’s a greatly increased presence of female artists at this year’s festival, too.
