Melissa Harrison is the Costa Prize-shortlisted and Baileys Prize-longlisted author of At Hawthorn Time. Her latest book, All Among the Barley, is a powerful novel about the lessons of history and the dangers of nostalgia. Set in Suffolk between the wars, it is a masterful evocation of the rhythms of the natural world and pastoral life.

Tim Pears is the author of In the Place of Fallen Leaves (winner of the Hawthornden Prize and the Ruth Hadden Memorial Award), Landed (shortlisted for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize) and The Horseman, the first book in The West Country Trilogy. The second in the series, The Wanderers, takes us on a journey from the agricultural world at the turn of the first century, through to the devastation and upheaval of the First World War. The third and final instalment, The Redeemed, will be published in January.

Together they discuss the pastoral novel and how storytellers can use the countryside to tell us about politics, sex and death, the lessons of history and the dangers of nostalgia.
