Hadley Freeman – The 2018 Philip French Memorial Lecture
- Artists
- Hadley Freeman
Philip French was Britain’s foremost film critic – well-informed, widely-read, with a deep understanding of the practicalities of film-making and a taste for elaborate puns – and legions of readers of his regular reviews in the Observer and essays in Sight and Sound were devoted to his work.
French was educated at Bristol Grammar School, and his first job as a professional journalist was on the Bristol Evening Post.
In Festival of Ideas’ third Philip French Lecture, Hadley Freeman (Guardian columnist and author of Be Awesome: Modern Life for Modern Ladies and Life Moves Pretty Fast: The Lessons We Learned from Eighties Movies) looks at what it was that made French’s writing so special, and how he inspired a whole generation not just to love movies but to love movie writing. She talks about how he supported her in her own work, and discusses the role of a columnist today.
